6 Inexpensive Ways To Get to Work

As you look for a job, you may be worried about how you will get to your potential new office. Transportation can be expensive, especially if you have to go into a big city. Even if you have a motor vehicle, the cost of gas alone can eat into your salary. Insurance for cars can be expensive, as well.

Thankfully, there are some cheaper options. Below are six inexpensive ways to get to work.

Take Mass Transit

If you live in a city, you may want to consider taking your local subway, train or bus. Prices may vary, so check online to see what the cost of your daily commute would be. Also, keep in mind that mass transit is not always the most reliable.

Still, you won’t have to buy a vehicle or pay for gas. By taking a subway, train or ferry, you should be able to avoid getting stuck in rush-hour traffic alongside other cars.

Walk

Of course, walking is only an option if you live relatively close to the office. Yet if you have this luxury, it is a great choice. It doesn’t cost you any money, and it is good exercise.

If you do want to walk to work, make sure you have comfortable shoes. You don’t want to deal with uncomfortable blisters once you get to the office.

Ride a Bicycle

Riding a bicycle to work is also a great way to get exercise. Some cities, including New York, Boston and Chicago, offer bike sharing programs that let users temporarily rent a bicycle for a small fee. You can also buy your own used bike for less than $50.

Use a Car Sharing Service

There are companies such as Zipcar that provide motor vehicle sharing services as well.  Some cities offer access to these cars for as little as $5 an hour even with the cost of gas and insurance.

Ride a Motorcycle or Scooter

While motorcycles aren’t for everyone, their large gas tanks allow for great mileage and fewer gas fill-ups. Scooters, meanwhile, get 60 miles per gallon and can cost less than $1,000.

Buy a Used Vehicle

If buying a car is your only option,  you should at least consider purchasing a used one. This will save you money that you can then put toward gas.

Sometimes, the best way to get cheap cars is through word of mouth. Tell your friends and relatives that you are looking for an inexpensive ride to work. One of them may be able to give you a great deal on a vehicle that isn’t being advertised online.

Don’t let the fear of costly insurance or an expensive commute limit you during your job search. Even if you don’t live within walking distance of a potential employer, you can always use one of the other options on this list. Even if you prefer cars over other modes of transportation, a used vehicle or a car-sharing service can save you money. You should thus feel free to apply for positions that are a little further away from your home. After all, the more places you apply to, the better your chances of landing a job.
